The Fishing Pole Trap

A cunning Ruy Lopez trap where the knight becomes the bait.

Ruy Lopez (Berlin/Classical)

Key Positions

4...Ng4-h5: the 'fishing pole' is cast — h3? is the bait

After 5.h3?? — White falls into the trap

Qh4 + Ng3+ — Black crashes through on the kingside

Plans

The Trap

  • h3?? This is the mistake! White sees the knight on h5 as offside and tries to trap it.
  • After ...Qh4, White's kingside collapses — the knight jumps back to f4 or g3 with devastating effect.
  • The correct approach: ignore the knight on h5 and continue developing with d3 or d4.
  • d3 or d4 The refutation: play in the center instead of wasting time on the edge.

The Refutation

  • ...Nh5! The fishing pole is cast — daring White to play h3.
  • ...Qh4 After h3?, immediately bring the queen to h4 threatening ...Qxh3.
  • ...Ng3 The knight returns with tempo, forking the rook and threatening ...Qh1#.
  • If White doesn't play h3, the knight is awkwardly placed — but the trap was worth a try.

Key Principle

The Fishing Pole punishes automatic pawn moves. Never play h3 to 'chase' a knight unless you've calculated the consequences — the knight might be bait.
