The Elephant Trap

A QGD trap where grabbing the queen wins a piece instead.

Queen's Gambit Declined

Key Positions

Normal QGD position — but after cxd5 a trap lurks

After 5.cxd5 Nxd5: if 6.Nxd5?? Qxd5 is fine, but 6.e4?? walks into it

The trap sprung: after ...Bb4! pinning Nc3, Black wins material

Plans

The Trap

  • e4?? This natural-looking move walks into the trap — the knight on d5 takes on e4!
  • After ...Nxe4, if Nxe4 then ...Bb4+ wins the knight back, or if dxe5 then ...Bb4 pins and wins the Nc3.
  • The refutation: after ...Nxd5, play 6.e3 or 6.Bd3 developing calmly, NOT the aggressive 6.e4.
  • e3 Safe: develop the bishop before pushing e4, avoiding the trap entirely.

The Refutation

  • ...Nxd5 Recapture on d5 with the knight, setting the stage for the trap.
  • ...Nxe4! After White's premature e4, grab the pawn with the f6 knight.
  • ...Bb4! The key move: pin the c3 knight. If White takes the e4 knight, ...Bxc3+ wins.
  • Black ends up winning a piece in all main variations of the trap.

Key Principle

The Elephant Trap punishes premature central expansion. In the QGD, e4 must be prepared carefully — rushing it can walk into tactical disasters.
