Silman 5-Step Thinking Technique
A repeatable process to replace random move generation.
How to Reassess Your Chess (4th Edition) Silman planning heuristics
Key Positions
Step 1: list imbalances before calculating lines
Step 3 dream position: knight anchored on d5 with coordinated pieces
Step 5: candidate move executed (Rc1) to approach the dream setup
Plans
When It Helps
- Step 1: list imbalances for both sides; do not calculate yet.
- Step 2: pick the board sector where your favorable imbalance lives.
- Step 3: define a realistic dream setup for your pieces and pawns.
- Steps 4-5: check opponent counterplay, then calculate concrete candidate moves.
When It Hurts
- Use the same checklist defensively: identify your weaknesses before choosing moves.
- When under pressure, ask whether the opponent's dream setup can be disrupted in one move.
- Do not obey every threat automatically; verify if active counterplay is stronger.
- Avoid lazy moves that improve nothing. Every move should support a concrete step in your plan.
Key Principle
Plan first, calculate second. The 5-step method forces your tactics to serve a strategic goal instead of random hope chess.
