White targets the bad light-squared bishop

Plans

White's Plans

  • Target Black's bad light-squared bishop hemmed in by e6, d5, f5.
  • Bf4 or Bg5 Exploit the dark squares that Black's pawns don't control.
  • b3 + Ba3 Trade dark-squared bishops to weaken Black's kingside cover.
  • Maneuver pieces to exploit the e5 square — Black's f-pawn left it unguarded.

Black's Plans

  • ...Nf6-e4 Occupy the ironclad e4 outpost — the formation's crown jewel.
  • ...Bd6 Aim the bishop at h2 to support a kingside attack.
  • ...Qf6 or ...Qh5 Swing the queen to the kingside for mating ideas.
  • ...b6, ...Bb7 Solve the bad bishop problem by fianchettoing it.

Key Principle

The Stonewall trades the light-squared bishop's future for an unassailable knight outpost on e4. The attack must compensate before the bishop becomes a liability.
