White's minority attack: a4-b4 underway

Black prepares ...Ne4 kingside play

Plans

White's Plans

  • a2-a4, b2-b4 Launch the minority attack to damage Black's queenside pawns.
  • b4-b5 Force ...cxb5 creating an isolated b-pawn, or bxc6 leaving a backward c-pawn.
  • Place rooks on b1 and c1 to pressure the aftermath.
  • f3, e4 Alternative: central break to open lines if Black is dug in on the queenside.

Black's Plans

  • ...Ne4 Transfer a knight to the kingside for attacking chances.
  • ...f5 Support the knight and open lines against White's king.
  • ...Bd6 Aim the bishop at h2 to support the kingside attack.
  • Race: generate threats before the minority attack creates permanent weaknesses.

Key Principle

The Carlsbad is a race — White grinds on the queenside while Black attacks the king. The side that executes faster wins. Don't passively defend; counterattack.
